JCOM1939 Legacy Version

Our J1939 to USB gateway had to undergo a redesign in 2022. The processor we were using, the NXP LPC1754, was no longer available. The image above shows the old design.

Our new design is based on the ESP32 processor, but we tried to keep the functionality identical between the two versions. This applies primarily to the JCOM1939 Monitor Software for Windows, which we kept function-compatible until the very last moment. In other words, we kept the gateway’s firmware untouched and updated only the Windows software.

However, as of September 2024, we are now at a point where we need to modify the firmware to support higher communication speed with the PC, which is mandatory for another new feature, i.e., the support of timestamps for CAN data frames. These modifications apply only to the ESP32 version.

We understand the importance of supporting those who work with the previous hardware design. That’s why we’ve kept some legacy references, such as the user manual, the latest firmware version, and the latest supported JCOM1939 Monitor Software for Windows. We want to ensure a smooth transition for all our users.

The user manual includes information on loading the gateway’s firmware:

A Comprehensible Guide to SAE J1939A Comprehensible Guide to J1939 is the first work on J1939 besides the SAE J1939 standards collection. It provides profound information on the J1939 message format and network management combined with a high level of readability.

The information in this book is based on two documents of the SAE J1939 Standards Collection:

  • J1939/21 – Data Link Layer
  • J1939/81 – Network Management

This book attempts to create an enjoyable and readable J1939 reference for everybody. The information provided in this book is, besides the SAE J1939 Standards Collection, based on publicly available information such as, but not limited to, websites and printed literature as well as contributions by engineers familiar with Controller Area Network and the J1939 protocol. The information in this book, while based on the J1939 standard, is not a reproduction of any copyrighted SAE document. More Information…
